With the holidays fast approaching, white snowflakes will soon fall and a new season for adventure in Bryce Canyon Country will arrive. Within the area, there are three sections of the Dixie National Forest for you to bring family and friends to see adventure throughout the holiday season. Each district consists of plateaus that make up pieces of the famous Colorado Plateau.
When snow falls, there are three bucket-list-worthy experiences that will be the highlight of any trip in the area.
Ice fishing
Drive Scenic Byway 143, Utah’s Patchwork Parkway, to Panguitch Lake to experience Ice Fishing. It could be argued that it’s one of the best locations for ice fishing in Utah. As the surface of the ice freezes over, you can see the water rushing below you with the fish waiting to grab the bait on the end of your hook. Locals say the best bait are ice flies, jigs, glow-in-the-dark jig heads tipped with nightcrawlers, mill worms and wax worms.
There are many vacation rentals by Panguitch Lake. However, there are also lodging options and vacations rentals available in the nearby town of Panguitch so you don’t have to travel far for your day on the lake. If you make a catch of the day, you can enjoy that for dinner or visit some of the local eateries in the area. Often, the trout range from 14 to 24 includes in size at Panguitch Lake.
Fishing is always available at other places within Dixie National Forest including Pine Lake, Posey Lake and Tropic Reservoir.
Snowmobiling
Although Panguitch Lake has hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails, snowmobiling at nearby Tropic Reservoir is also a good choice for adventure seekers as there are over twenty miles of snowmobile trails winding through the spruce trees of the forest. Easily accessible from another scenic byway, America’s Scenic Byway Utah Highway 12, you can access the East Fork Trail and the East Fork of the Sevier River.
Other trails including Badger Loop, Dave’s Hollow, Coyote Hollow Loop and King’s Creek Loop are snowmobile trails that take you all the way from Bryce Canyon City to Panguitch Lake! Imagine the day’s experience on those trails!
Cross-country skiing
If you are looking to cross-country ski in Bryce Canyon Country, Dixie National Forest in Bryce Canyon City is a unique and fun way to get a beautiful look over the park and its amphitheater. Red Canyon, very similar to Bryce Canyon National Park, allows cross-country skiing in the winter and is a beautiful location in Dixie National Forest. The 17-mile trail that is often used in the summer for biking and hiking is covered in white snow and is perfect for cross-country skiing.
Experience a large network of cross-country trails in the area near Bryce Canyon City. These trails provide opportunities to see beautiful vistas looking down from the rim as you ski outside the National Park.
